Moving on to Secondary School

Transition to Secondary School

We understand that moving from primary to secondary school is an important milestone, and we work hard to ensure that every child feels confident, prepared, and excited for the next stage of their education. Throughout Year 6, pupils take part in a range of transition activities designed to develop their independence, resilience, and organisational skills. We work closely with all secondary schools across the borough to share information and ensure that each child's individual needs are understood and supported.

In addition, we partner with external agencies to deliver specialist workshops and transition programmes, helping pupils build confidence, address any worries, and prepare for the changes ahead. For pupils who may find the transition more challenging, we provide additional wellbeing support and tailored interventions to help them adjust positively and feel secure about the move to secondary school.

Through strong communication with families, secondary schools, and external partners, we strive to make the transition process as smooth and successful as possible for every child.

Important dates

The key dates for the Transfer to Secondary process can be found in the following table.

Please ensure that you meet the date for submitting your online application. Submitting a late application could seriously jeopardise your chances of being offered a place at one of your preferred schools.

The application process for children born between 1 September 2015 and 31 August 2016 starts on 1 September 2026. The closing date is 31 October 2026. If you have recently moved or your circumstances have changed an on-time application can be accepted up until 7 December 2026 with supporting evidence. Applications received without an explanation or evidence will be processed as late applications and will not be considered until after all on-time applications.

We would urge all parents to read through the starting secondary school information online.
