Communication and Language
Communication and language is so important as it allows a person to think, exchange information with others in a meaningful way and socially interact with others through life. Language is also the primary medium of learning, therefore language difficulties can have an impact on a child’s performance and ability to learn. At HPAM we run communication and language groups for our children from the age of two!
These groups support children with:
- Eye contact, waiting, turn taking, initiating and responding
- Attention and listening
- Expressive language – vocabulary and sentence building
- Conversation
- Storytelling
- Understanding / comprehension
We believe that communication groups provide our children with the skills they need to be a successful learner. During this unusual time we want to continue to provide our children with opportunities to develop their communication and language skills. The Communication and language slides include simple activities that you can complete at home to support your child in this area. They include activities at different levels, so choose the activities that match your child’s level of development. Repetition is important for children when learning language, so it is okay to repeat the activities. Remember to give your child lots of praise throughout the activities and if they make a grammatical mistake repeat their sentence back to them correctly rather than highlighting their error.
There are also some videos that you can watch with your child. Encourage your child to listen and join in by naming objects and saying a simple sentence when asked.
The activities are intended to be fun and we hope that you enjoy them as well as your child!
